On Saturday, April 9, owners Jigme Love and Courtney Watkins wielded a giant pair of scissors and held a traditional grand opening for the public. A pink carpet was rolled out and their dedicated team was on-hand to welcome shoppers to the grand opening celebrations.

The boutique interiors are crisp white with custom copper piping, glass display units holding a varied selection of preloved and new fashion over a main floor and cozy mezzanine.

The boutique began with 300 square feet on Hornby Street in September 2013, operating from the bottom floor of a townhouse unit, and grew into the latest incarnation in a dedicated retail space spanning over 1100 square feet. Along the way there were pop-up shops on Robson Street, South Granville and on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.

Mine & Yours operate a retail model that differs from the consignment and resale stores that are peppered throughout the city.  Here customers have the option, three days per week, to directly sell their brand items for cash or a store credit, with a minimum 50/50 consignment offered on luxury handbags only.

What will you find at the new boutique?

Savvy shoppers will find highly sought after brands, such as handbags by Louis Vuitton, Prada and Gucci and current fashionable garments by Alexander Wang, Acne, Isabel Marant, and 3.1 Phillip Lim. Luxury labels are well represented by Alexander McQueen, Giuseppe Zanotti, Christian Louboutin and Roger Vivier.

When asked about the most unique pieces that have passed through their doors, founder Jigme Love replied that there had so many but one of the most memorable was an Alexander McQueen hand-embroidered fabric neck brace with corset-like closure, followed closely by a one-of-a-kind resin Valentino necklace and a vintage Prada blue python coat.

Future plans for the retail brand include expanding the e-commerce business, launching a resale directory called vancouverconsignment.ca with upstart re-seller mymoderncloset.ca and establishing a permanent retail presence in Los Angeles.

Mine & Yours also regularly participates in Eco Fashion Week via fashion shows, panel discussions, seminars in support of community and charitable organizations such as My Sister’s Closet (which benefits Battered Women’s Support Services) and the BC Children’s Hospital.

Prada Quietly Launches Canadian Flagship in Vancouver

On Friday, March 11th at 10:00am, the chrome and glass doors of the Prada flagship were unlocked, quietly announcing the Italian luxury brand had opened for business in Vancouver. Associates in white gloves ushered in, and welcomed, those who were waiting patiently in the cool morning air. Located at 1098 Alberni Street, it is the latest luxury brand to open in the city’s soon-to-be maximized ‘Luxury Zone‘.

Prada’s exterior facade features chrome and slim strips of black Marquinia marble. The store’s ground floor features two entrances. This flagship was designed by Studio Baciocchi, an architect registered in Italy, who has created Prada stores worldwide which are known for their elegance, clean-lines and European aesthetic.

The store features women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, leather goods, accessories and footwear collections. Mannequin’s featuring the latest women’s collection are featured throughout the space with patterns, stripes and oversized paillettes in colour and black and white combinations.

Prada brings patterns and textures back for Spring/Summer

Signature black-and-white marble chequered flooring covers much of the store. As well, the store features steel and crystal display counters and the trademark Verner Panton “Clover Leaf” sofas sections which have been distributed throughout the store as a full sofa is much too large to be accommodated on either of the floors.

The various departments are separated by mirrored and marble portals which reflect the flooring and the garments and give patrons a sense of a continuous Prada inspired fantasy.

Walls textures were created with a combination of a green fabric (which has the texture of a coarse raw silk), which has been overpainted a soft sea foam green. Precious leather goods and jewellery is defined by black Marquinia marble-clad walls.

The second-floor features large floor-to-ceiling windows, sections of the “Clover Leaf” sofa, transparent perspex cases, skylights and display tables.

Patrons ascend to the second floor to women’s ready-to-wear, men’s wear and Made-to-Measure via hidden elevator or by the black marble staircase which has chrome railings and mirrors so one almost feels caught in an Escher masterpiece.

Men’s Ready-to-Wear | Helen Siwak

The men’s section features a more masculine feel and the materials used reflect this with finishes such as ebony floorboards and walls, metal and crystal display units and ‘Wilson’s Purple’ ostrich leather sofas.

There is strong contrast between the furnishings and the latest men’s collection which uses imagery of large eyes with fluttering lashes, rabbits, monkeys, and space shuttles.

Men’s Casual Ready-to-Wear | Helen Siwak

The men’s Made-to-Measure department is the only one of its kind in Canada for Prada. According to a sales associate, pricing may reach up to $28,000 for a three piece suit depending on the purchasers taste in fabrics, buttons and stitchwork. The fabric selection is exclusive to Prada and includes various wools and combinations with mohair and other exotic animal hair.

The use of ‘Wilson’s Purple‘ is a departure from the standard emerald green furniture previously displayed in the renderings published by Prada. Display counters with Saffiano leather detailing in bright hues complement the furnishings.

Next month Prada will be hosting a luxury workshop where shoppers looking for the ultimate heels, will be able to ‘build their own shoes’ and the event will be by invite only. Ensure on your next visit, to have your details added to their mailing list!

I needed art – Hot Art Wet City – kind of art, but this was not a typical rainy night in Vancouver – not the usual pissy drizzle that people complain about wrecking their hair – this was a full on downpour with rivers running around your boots. So much rain that pausing for cover under The Whip awning immediately invited conversation by a sweaty clutch of cigarette smoking guys who knew you were not going anywhere fast. That kind of cleansing, but deplorable to go out in, rain.

The Hot Art Wet City Antisocial Media show is the current installation and is a collection of works by i♥ (above) , eafo and The Grominator inspired in the wake of several cliché personal experiences involving love, addiction, and stupidity.

i♥  is from Western Canada, born sometime in the late 1980s and is anonymous by choice. His thing is appropriating elements of digital culture and enjoys exploration of blurring the boundaries of life on- and offline.

Earthfolk, aka eafo hails from Calgary, a guy who makes things. He mostly draws and writes things using walls, canvas, paper and found resources. His work has an air of uncertainty but there is evidence of a lot of happiness, sadness, and uncertainty in his pieces.

The Grominator, a Canadian graffiti artist, is widely recognized for his psychedelic monsters and graffiti on trains throughout Canada and the United States. He began painting trains in 2008 in his hometown of Calgary, and initially creating art in 2006. Extensive traveling throughout Canada and the United States ultimately created a strong following in North America and worldwide. He now explores new forms inspired by model trains and toys, to collaborations with clothing companies and long boarding companies.

Hot Wet Art City is curated by Chris Bentzen (below) and has been located for three years in a mixed use space at 2206 Main Street that showcases an amazingly weird art gallery, comedy, yoga, and more – it is always changing for the quirkier and better.
