The re-birth of the brand began with its partnership with Montreal-based Freemark Apparel Brands, which is coordinating the expansion of the company’s Canadian operations.

Looking to reach a youth market, Esprit has launched a street-level #ImPerfect campaign which draws from party culture of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s and the above featured campaign billboards are dotted throughout Vancouver and the suburbs.

This campaign comes hot on the heels of the earlier 2016 street-level campaign, with controversial blogger Leandra Medine (aka Man Repeller), which created a humorous series on how to create #ImPerfect dance moves imagery during your daily commute.

Freemark’s vice president of sales and co-owner, Lawrence Routtenberg, said that Esprit’s previous store locations were often quite large and this time around, stores will generally be in the 1,500 to 2,500 square foot range to create more of an intimate boutique feel. The two stores also feature casual west coast-inspired interiors with natural wood finishings, which were designed in Germany, where Esprit’s corporate office is located.

Founded in California in 1968, Esprit has been a retailer for men, women, and children. Leaving North America in 2012 to focus on the European and Asian markets, the brand has collections ranging from casual to dressy.

Routtenberg revealed that long-term, the brand will look to carefully open freestanding Canadian stores, while being respectful to the brand’s roughly 250 Canadian wholesale specialty accounts. Ultimately, he said that Canada could see about 30 or so Esprit stores, though exact numbers would be contingent on opportunity and the economy.

Esprit wants only the ‘best’ locations for its stores and, as a result, top malls will be targeted. For example, this fall, Esprit is confirmed to be opening its third Canadian store at Mississauga’s Square One Shopping Centre. Urban street front locations may also be considered, with Robson Street in Vancouver, as a possibility. Eventually, outlet stores could be added to the mix, Routtenberg said.

Eco Fashion Week wraps season 10 in eco-style (PHOTOS)

http://helensiwak.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Eco-Fashion-BTS-Collage-1-1.jpg

Eco Fashion Week celebrated Season 10 in true eco-style with six days of runway collections by local and international designers, designer meet and greets, an eco-friendly shopping area and a series of panels and conversations, all coordinated by the team led by founder Myriam Laroche.

The 10th season also mixed up the usual format of having all events take place at the Fairmont Waterfront. The opening invitation only event was held at newly launched RYU in Kitsilano amidst the sports garments and athleisure wear. Interspersed within the space were large textile and story boards, where attendees, while noshing and sipping, could learn more about the people and the science that goes into the brand.

Balmain Chic Sheets Challenge | Bijan Dharas

Day 2 saw the Balmain Chic Sheets Challenge hit the runway. Eight EFW alumni were tasked with creating garments inspired by the legendary fashion house of Pierre Balmain with 2-4 sets of used bed linens from the Fairmont Hotel. These designers created a wonderfully diverse collection of pieces which are currently on display in CF Pacific Centre and fans of upcycling can vote on their favourite until April 30th.

Carolyn Bruce Designs | Peter Jensen

There were two runway collections that evening. The steampunk and futuristic over-sized statement pieces that we are so familiar with, created by Carolyn Bruce Designs, were shown side by side with newer cutesy pieces which included adorable upcycled handbags and radios adorned with bright red accessories, butterflies and eyeglasses. A new direction? We loved it.

Dahlia Drive & Reg Davidson Collaborative Collection | Peter Jensen

The second runway was the pinnacle of the evening. Designer Wendy Van Reisen of Dahlia Drive collaborated with renowned Haida Gwaii artist Reg Davidson, to create an eclectic fluttering line of beautiful pieces. Dahlia Drive is known for creating clothing from discarded white curtain sheers and slips upon which various nature and anatomy based images are screened.

Ellen Legro Collection | Peter Jensen

Day 3 was a three-part evening starting with designers; then the Value Village sponsored Thrift Chic Challenge and closed the VCAD 81 lbs Challenge. In the first set of designers, Ellen Legro stood out for creating recycling looks for those who participate in winter sports and love the outdoors. Her pieces were earth-toned, warm, and perfect for week-end away in Whistler during ski season.

The ever popular Thrift Chic Challenge, featured three local stylists – Jason Pillay, Nadia Albano, and Natalie Rees – and challenged them to create ten runway outfits with a budget of $500 only using Value Village unsold stock.

Nadia’s collection was lush with texture, patterns and colours which reflected a slightly bourgeois hippy essence and Natalie’s collection incorporated denim, florals and sheers to create a collection that embodied a bohemian look so popular at summer festivals.

Jason Pillay Collection – Thrift Chic Challenge by Value Village | Peter Jensen

The stand-out collection was styled by recent fashion design school graduate Jason Pillay. His collection was incredibly vibrant, texturally alluring, and with diverse styling that oftentimes reflected his own quirky, but striking, style sense that has made him one of the most photographed persons at all of Vancouver’s fashion weeks.

The final Value Village sponsored runway featured a group of grad students from VCAD who were challenged to create a full collection using 81 lbs of unsold garments – the amount the average North American throws into the landfills each year.

Under the guidance of VCAD instructors Jason Matlo, Wen-Chee Liu and Glencora Twigg, the collection had a 1920’s Gatsby theme and the students made the decision to include the accessories – shoes, jewellery and headpieces into the total weight, which made the collection even more amazing.

Day 4 showcased local and international designers including Vancouver’s Laudae bridal collection (sister company to Truvelle Bridal in Gastown) and returning designer Jeff Garner brought his Prophetik collection all the way from Tennessee.

The line was entitled “Ruins & Renaissance” and consisted of a wide range of fabrics that were coloured with all-natural plant and earth-based dyes. The fabrics themselves consisted of hemp silks and denims, vintage French lace and reclaimed leather.  The collection was walked to classic country and rock-a-billy tunes which were performed by a duo traveling with the collection, and the evening closed with models and attendees dancing on the runway. Truly a sight to behold.

Day 5 was The EFW Collective Conversation. These panels are part of an ongoing educational series for fashion industry members and the general public that EFW holds each season. It was a day of open dialogue aimed at providing information on the challenges, opportunities and innovations facing the sustainability of the garment and textile industry.

Held at the Waterfall Building in False Creek, Erin Cebula of ET Canada moderated panels which contained guests from Canada and the US, including Tony Shumpert of Value VillageKyle Ruzinski of Levi and Strauss Co, Vancouver designer Nicole Bridger and Glencora Twigg of VCAD.

This final session concluded with a one-on-one conversation with local footwear designer John Fluevog, who started by saying he did not consider his company ‘eco’ and then told his life’s story with flare and wit, and as with every fashion week around the globe, by the last day, everyone needed a bit of humour to close it down with a smile.

Earlier in April, two of our most dapper columnists attended HBC’s semi-annual ‘Guys’ Night Out’, an evening dedicated to men’s shopping. Both events, tied into the Bay Days promotion were very well-attended, as reported by Vancouver’s Ritchie Po and Toronto’s Craig Patterson.

Toronto and Vancouver aren’t the cities that automatically come to mind when you think of men’s fashion. There are literally dozens of blogs dedicated to how the gentleman dresses for the High Street or Paris (and several more on the Williamsburg hipster).

Vancouver Guys’ Night Out

The West Coast event happened on the men’s floor of the downtown Vancouver flagship Hudson’s Bay location where past events attracted a number of high-profile guests. At the first-ever event in the fall of 2012, Ritchie was quietly sipping on champagne when Trevor Linden brushed past en route to meet who appeared to have been a private stylist.

This spring’s affair was a bit more subdued, but several DJ and drink stations were positioned throughout the floor to attract traffic throughout, and as always the catering was top-notch. This is a guys’ event, so no amuse-bouches here, only sliders and mac-n-cheese bites for those with great appetites for food and fashion.

Although the focus was on suiting, with deep discounts on durable ready-to-wear brands such as Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole and Michael Kors. Additionally, there were also options such as Ted Baker, Strellson and Hugo Boss for the taking (but which, sadly, were not on sale). ‘Guys Night Out’ attracted a number of local menswear notables including Nordstrom’s Alnoor Dawood, publicist Kalvin Simms (attending from Toronto), and bespoke atelier owner Joey Dimz, who was profiled this past winter in Knotwerk by Ritchie Po.

Toronto’s Guys’ Night Out

Craig attended the Queens Street flagship location, where a dazzling display of high-end designer brands blended in with the more typical ready-to-wear labels. Balmain, Marni, Moschino, JW Anderson, Rick Owens, Junya Watanabe, Versace and other brands grace the store’s new designer men’s department. Other brands are artfully displayed on the bright 100,000 square foot men’s floor, which is the largest of its kind in Canada.

The Toronto Guys’ Night Out event is somewhat different than the Vancouver experience – in Toronto, CEO’s and brand representatives rubbed shoulders with wholesalers and distributors, as well as fashionable locals and other key industry players.

The boutique began with 300 square feet on Hornby Street in September 2013, operating from the bottom floor of a townhouse unit, and grew into the latest incarnation in a dedicated retail space spanning over 1100 square feet. Along the way there were pop-up shops on Robson Street, South Granville and on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.

Mine & Yours operate a retail model that differs from the consignment and resale stores that are peppered throughout the city.  Here customers have the option, three days per week, to directly sell their brand items for cash or a store credit, with a minimum 50/50 consignment offered on luxury handbags only.

What will you find at the new boutique?

Savvy shoppers will find highly sought after brands, such as handbags by Louis Vuitton, Prada and Gucci and current fashionable garments by Alexander Wang, Acne, Isabel Marant, and 3.1 Phillip Lim. Luxury labels are well represented by Alexander McQueen, Giuseppe Zanotti, Christian Louboutin and Roger Vivier.
