Capturing the spirit of youth and wisdom | Helen Siwak

“Fabrics are the soul of clothes. The ready-to-wear collections From Paris to are made out of love for quality fabrics. The collections’ fabrics come from luxury houses’ old collections, we call it luxury upcycling, this process gives a second life to fabrics. We also use natural and organic fabrics such as raffia and recycled materials. As for accessories, I opted for premium leather scraps from non-protected species. From Paris to, it’s two collections a year as well as limited edition capsule collections for slow fashion seasons. We believe this a sustainable way to go back to the real essence of fashion. “

The textures, the fringe, the play of soft and rough within a single garment | Helen Siwak

With natural talent and skills gleaned from time at Chanel and Michael Kors, Floriane is the vivacious 25 year old Cameroonian-French designer  behind the  From Paris To line.

This week, Floriane flew from Paris to Vancouver, to showcase an intimate preview of her two collections to media, buyers and influencers in historic Gastown.

Cindy Yu (TheVancouveriteBlog), our  gracious host, first met the determined talent at Paris Fashion Week and a collaboration was soon formed. I personally loved that the showing was in an intimate space overlooking downtown Vancouver – a wonderful personal touch so suitable to the youthful and inquisitive designer.

To be a Muse for Floriane Fosso

What followed the discussion was a completely unexpected surprise. Floriane requested, in that gentle but persuasive way she has, that we all model our favourite pieces from the Collections and an impromptu photoshoot was afoot! Here is my best shot. A little sassy with a touch of editorial.

The strapless dress was layered with mesh and upcycled leather in the bodice with a curious shredded trim which added a touch of whimsy and had me craving a delicious coconut treat. I joked with Floriane that no one seen me in anything strapless since high school graduation 1984!

Watch for more on Floriane in the upcoming year, as she will be visiting Vancouver again in January and July.  In the meantime, if you are visiting Paris, she is opening at the Palais Royal at 39 rue de Monpensier.

Merci beaucoup Floriane and Cindy for the invitation, the bubbly and pulling me out of my comfort zone and into a Parisian state of mind, if only for a couple of hours.

Floating Away Stress at HÄLSA Spa in Kits

Some days are definitely harder than others. We can all relate to the incessant need to work 24/7 to build our brand and survive in this city. After a particularly stressful month, an invitation from Halsa Spa to ‘try a float’ and enjoy a few hours of relaxation had me eagerly anticipating my first dip into a flotation tank.

I loved the aesthetic of the futuristic design of the flotation tank and the quietness that it promised. This was to be followed a full body treatment by masseuse Michael Strickland – who has 23 years of training including with masters in Hawaii and Mongolia – then some steaming herbal tea while contemplating the universe.

halsa spa, kitsilano, mental wellness, healthy living, entrepreneur, women in business, lifestyle magazine, ecoluxury, fashion, blogger, fblogger, style, theclosetyvr, vancouver, yvr, vancity, designer, luxury, helen siwak, retailKitsilano was busy on a Friday afternoon and stepping into Halsa Spa was a soothing treat. Cool in temperature and immediately calming with the surrounding presence of warm woods and succulents.

The pre-arrival email had advised to avoid caffeine, enjoy a light snack a few hours before and no shaving/waxing for at least 24 hours before. I chose to skip breakfast (so I could really enjoy a meal afterwards!), had a berry herbal tea and arrived 15 minutes earlier than expected to get a feel for the spa and those that worked within.

I had referred to the Halsa Spa website for the more woman oriented questions about floating:  Can one could float while menstruating? Yes. Use a tampon or menstrual cup. Will the salt strip my hair colour? No, but wait 7 days after a colour to do so, just to be safe. Will I look like a prune afterwards walking to lunch? No. Epsom salts do not dehydrate the skin.

My guide, Christian, handed me a pair of sandals to wear, so I slipped off my preloved Gucci loafers and slipped on the sanitized sandals before padding off to my flotation room.

Already prepared with barely there make-up and no hair product, all that was needed was a quick click to lock the door, slip out of my clothes, put in my complimentary ear plugs, shower and climb in.

The Halsa Spa Flotation Experience

After the open air shower, I climbed into the pod with its 10″ of water and 1000 lbs of Epsom salt and immediately floated effortlessly on the surface. In fact it appeared a quarter of my body was above the water!

As I have an attention span of about 5 seconds, I played with the lights, the music, paddled about, thought about what I was doing with my life, practiced a few Esther Williams poses and then nothing. Blackness. The sleep hit without any warning and suddenly the lights and music were back on prompting me to proceed out of my warm cocoon. Confusion set in but then a WOW moment where I thought – I really unplugged for 50 minutes. That was unbelievable!

An environment of silence, darkness, and lack of stimulation, really served as the perfect antidote to the stress of my modern plugged-in life, plus there are no phones or laptops in the pod. Just you and the dark. The Epsom salts had left a slickness on my skin and another soothing shower was in order with the available hand-crafted botanical cleansers and moisturizers.

My masseuse, Michael met me outside the private vanity room – a blow dry was in order – and led me upstairs to the massage area.

Michael’s study of massage is truly worldly. With training at some of the premier facilities in the world, he is always looking to provide a unique experience for his clients and I experienced an hour under his relentless hands. Michael studied under a Hawaiian elder to learn the ancient art of Lomi Lomi and also spent a year in Dalazadgad, Mongolia with a 93 year old shaman who taught him the signature Mongolian Healing Journey which is an 8 hour massage process!

Filtered water, herbal teas, blow-dryers, in-house crafted lotions, and other amenities are available after your float in the private vanity room. How simply gorgeously minimalist is this space?!

There are many additional wellness treatments available at the spa and I encourage anyone who is looking for a relation experience to visit. There are 4 flotation therapy rooms, 2 custom infrared saunas, 3 massage rooms and an upstairs relaxation and re-hydration lounge that overlooks that bustle of West 4th. Leave the world behind for a few hours and enjoy.

On a hot yet breezy day, Anastasiia and I ventured to the park, to find some shade among the greenery, to showcase the latest in summer socks from Instance.

Even with her back against the wall, Anastasiia’s style commanded attention in these colourful floral designs. It is never too late to cultivate an uncommon point of view and let it show in your every day wear. Pairing rich floral patterns with boyfriend jeans, sandals, and a sassy burger and fries tee, shouts “I AM HERE!

‘Skin is In’ Reserve socks in hot pink | Helen Siwak

The ‘Skin is In’ Reserve Collection is inspired by the visceral experience of the midday heat, so Instance created a collection of sheer socks with a barely-there look and feel. Silky to the touch and shimmering in the sun, the see-through cuties add that quirky look and feel to Anastasiia’s casual summer look that had everyone wondering – Who is this girl?!

Luckily for us, there was a Starbuck‘s across the street so we did not wilt in the heat. Green Tea Crème Frappuccino‘s really hit the spot. Perfect match to the ‘healthy green’ which was our theme today! So delicious and the cool cement interior made it our haven.

Follow Instance Socks @stancesocks and keep up with their latest looks and the versatile socks that keep your feet comfy and on-trend. The Summer 16 Collection is already available at select retailers across Canada and in Vancouver at (our fave) Nordstrom, Sport Chek, and the Boardroom, to name a few.

Chanel: Channeling your inner Coco

When I received confirmation for the invite to Chanel re-launch event at Holt Renfrew, a mere 12 hours in advance, hitting my favourite designer shops were not an option nor was it possible to hit Mine & Yours for a desperation pull. So into my closet I went and came out with a black and white ensemble that came to me in a nap. Seriously a last minute 4pm nap solved my wardrobe problem.

I confess that I have a compulsive habit of visiting secondhand shops and buying garments and accessories that I love – for the way they feel, their texture, cut and style – but (most times) cannot fit or wouldn’t even consider wearing them. When I get home they are put away lovingly in my collection and I revisit them every so often just to say Hello Beautiful.

For the Chanel event, black and white proved to be a solid choice. Over the course of the evening, my ensemble received many comments on how I had hit the essence of Mademoiselle perfectly. Cool. Bon soir Coco.
